Big Ideas

Is great art selfish? Meaning – Art is supposed to be the purest manifestation an idea or emotion directly from one individual.

So, in it’s purest form art is made by one person for themselves to represent the idea or emotion they are feeling.

And great art touches peoples live because people recognize the purity of the art created and it can represent their same idea or emotion.

As musicians we’ve been misled to believe that we have a duty to write music that represents other peoples feelings and ideas not our own.

And because of that we’ve been making diluted art that can only be called music, not art. Art represents the self. Art is selfish.

But art is grand in it’s ability to move, connect and inspire. That is what it’s underlying purpose is once it is out of the artist and in the world.

Jack White

Just read the Spin article about Jack White and the Dead Weather. He’s a kooky guy, but truly inspiring. I love his authentic take on rock n roll as well as his business outlook.

Check it out. Happy long weekend to everyone.

EDIT - Ian

I just had to add that I fully agree with Nate, its inspiring to see someone pull influences from the old Delta Blues and fully make them his own. I especially liked the last quote of the article, “I feel it, you feel it – we’re all struggling with the trouble that this industry is in right now… And it’s not about sales; it’s about beauty and romance and a relationship to art that’s turning invisible, and it’s affecting people’s perception of music. It’s affecting whether they think of it as a viable art, because it’s so fucking disposable. It’s not about being modern or retro or a Luddite or being hopeful or pessimistric about the future; it’s about clinging on to what makes sense of our lives, and what gives our lives value, and what gives us a commonality and a feeling of belonging.”

Read part of the article here: SPIN.com and also view a video of the band making vinyl.

Technosera Tops

It never ceases to amaze me the unbelievable advances that have been made in technology over the last few years. We are now able to communicate with everyone and anyone in an instant and we have an unlimited amount of information at our fingertips. My sole concern is with making sure that EVERYONE has access to it – not just those with the funds to afford access. Knowledge is power and there has never been a more commanding time then now to give everybody that power. Please help support companies that are doing the right things.

The picture to the left is from one laptop per child – a non for profit organization which helps to spread technology to impoverished nations such as Rwanda and Uruguay. For more information and to help, please visit http://laptop.org.
